The background for tundra biome
Tundra is a biome at the top part of the Northern
hemisphere. Tundra is located in northern Canada and
northern Russia as seen in this photo. The tundra biome
mainly consists of mountains and flat land. But there are
two types of tundra, arctic and alpine. The arctic biome has
cold desert like conditions. The temperatures in the tundra
arctic biome is around -35° in the winter time and around
3°-12° in the summer time. The rainfall in the arctic tundra is
around 15-25 cm a year. In the arctic tundra biome there is a
type sub soil called permafrost. Permafrost is basically
permanently frozen soil. In the arctic tundra biome the plants'
roots do not go very deep and that is because when the rain falls it mainly stays on the surface of
the ground. Although the water stays on top of the ground mostly that doesn't mean that there are
no plants. In arctic tundra there are over 1,500 different types of plants, these include low shrubs,
mosses, grasses and over 400 types of flowers.
The alpine tundra is found on tops of mountains at high altitude. The growing season is about 180
days but not much even grows in those 180 days. The only plants that do grow are small trees,
small shrubs and grass. The animas in the alpine tundra had to adapt like that mountain goats and
birds.
